... It’s hard to say what ophthalmology and painting could have in common, however, it’s undeniable that vision and visual art have the same origin.
This was one of the reasons we had decided to include the exhibition space in the building plan of the ”Oftalmij” Clinic.
There are other causes too – I happen to be the heir of two artists, one of them being the People’s Artist of Georgia – Rusudan Javrishvili and the other – Datiko Tsereteli, my mother’s uncle. This represents quite enough responsibility by itself, in terms of taking care of paintings, cataloging them and holding exhibitions.
And one more, could we create such an area (our building and garden allow us to), where we perceive the piece of art not as a product, but as if we are involved in the process of its creation – the artist paints and shares the creative nuances of the painting process, the string quartet shares the experience of creating the musical composition, the workshop are held etc.
I recall very vividly my first visit to the Studio of Elene Akhvlediani, when I was 15 or 16. Interesting people like Sviatoslav Richter, Maria Grinberg, Mark Taimanov and others would gather there. The impressions of those times have never left me.
Today, meeting at dinners remain to be almost the only way of communications. As Temiko Chirgadze, our senior friend would say – “Georgian Sufra needs reform”. Let’s consider this presentation a part of such “reform”…
George Javrishvili
At the opening of the gallery were presented 40 works by 20 remarkable Georgian artists of the first half of the twentieth century. All these works belong to the collector Givi Parastashvili. On the vernissage were presented the paintings of Gudiashvili, Gabashvili, Akhvlediani, Kakabadze, Shukhayev, Toidze, Zdanevich and others. In the following months the gallery organized personal exhibitions of Rusudan Javrishvili, David Tsereteli and Gia Gugushvili.
